South Yorkshire Police to feel the funding crunch

SOUTH Yorkshire Police is having its budget slashed by almost £3 million as the Government ploughs ahead with a painful programme of spending reductions.

The coalition government today came under fire for the move, with Labour's shadow policing minister David Hanson saying the cuts "will have a real impact on policing, crime and the fight against terrorism".

Policing Minister Nick Herbert yesterday announced this year's core government funding to the police will be slashed by 125m and another 10m will be cut from counter-terrorism policing.

South Yorkshire Police's revenue grant for frontline policing in 2010/11 is cut by 2.8m from the 110.2m agreed by the Labour government in February.

The force's capital grant, which includes funding for the maintenance of police stations, is dropping by 200,000 from 3.3m to 3.1m.

Mr Herbert insisted the police need to contribute to spending cuts. "It is for Chief Constables to use their expertise and decide what makes most sense for their force, but I am quite clear this saving can be achieved by driving out wasteful spending on support functions, reducing bureaucracy and increasing efficiency in key functions - leaving the frontline of policing strong and secure," he said.

But Labour's David Hanson said: "I am extremely concerned. The funding cut will have a real impact on policing, crime and the fight against terrorism."
