A GRIEVING schoolboy whose body was found in woodland died just a few weeks after his beloved mum passed away – leaving relatives mourning a double tragedy.

The 15-year-old Liam Collier was pronounced dead in woodland in Elsecar, Barnsley, shortly after emergency services were alerted to the discovery of a body on Monday night.

It is understood his mum Deborah, aged 35, died on February 24 after a battle with cancer.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the Wombwell High School pupil’s death but are not treating it as suspicious.

A man standing outside Liam’s family home confirmed Liam’s father Alan had already lost his wife and was ‘devastated’.

A neighbour on Liam’s street said her daughter was friends with the youngster, and had heard from another pal that Liam had hanged himself.

She said: “I’m gobsmacked. His friends tried to pull him down but they didn’t know he was going to do it.

“I’ve been told that he said, ‘I want to be with my mum’. I can see that being the only possible reason he’s done it. His mum had been poorly for about two years. Then they found it had been terminal.”

Heartbroken tributes to Liam have been left by friends online - some referring to the death of his mum.

One said: “Guess you’re where you wanted to be - safe in heaven with your mummy.

“You were so young and such a great boy Liam, we were close friends and always had a laugh, I don’t know what I’m going to do without you.

“My heart goes out to you and all your family, all my thoughts are with them. We all miss and love you loads, little fella, sleep tight sweetie. Love you.”

Another added: “RIP Liam - you can join your mum in heaven, you’re in a safe place now.”

And another, written by Donna Corker, says: “RIP Liam - such a loss.”

On another website, a woman called Kathy wrote: “RIP - you will be missed by us all especially my son who was your bezzie mate.”

And in a message to Deborah on a tribute site in her memory, a cousin wrote: “Not sure what to say today Debs, the bad news again, but at least Liam will now be with you and your mum. Bless you all.”

The tragic teenager was found in an area off Millhouses Street, near the Skate Park, where youngsters meet and play regularly.

Yesterday morning all that marked the spot was the remnants of police tape put up when the scene was cordoned off while officers carried out initial inquiries.

Tributes, flowers and a photograph of Liam were laid in the area.

At Wombwell High School children who had not heard about his death arrived for lessons yesterday morning to discover the shocking news.

The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to be opened later this week.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman confirmed: “We were contacted at 8.30pm on Monday after an incident in a wooded area in Barnsley.

“Emergency services arrived at the scene, off Millhouses Street, Elsecar, and shortly afterwards a local 15-year-old boy was pronounced dead.

“Police are not treating the death as suspicious.”
