South Yorkshire will bask in scorching sunshine at the weekend with temperatures forecast to climb to above 30c.

The heatwave is set to continue into the start of the coming working week once barbecue sets and Bermuda shorts are packed away.

It's not a lot of hot air to predict southern zephyrs will push mercury above August average, potentially topping annual record.

While the week has started with a fresher feel, warmer weather will move in as the week progresses.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill confirmed: "Temperatures are likely to climb. As we go through the week, warm air will come more from the south-west.

"So, by the end of the week and then towards the beginning part of next week, we will then be drawing air from the south. Monday and Tuesday we are quite likely to see temperatures getting into the low thirties."

Sheffield is expected to be among "good chunk" of the country enjoying hotter climes.

Bookmakers have 1/4 odds-on temperatures scaling 30c before the end of this week, offering 2/1 odds UK record high temperature of 38.5c will be broken this summer.

Coral spokesman John Hill said: "If the forecasts are correct, we have a two-week heatwave to look forward to this month, which has promoted a gamble on this August being the hottest ever and for record high temperature to be broken in the UK this summer."
