South Yorkshire’s police and crime commissioner has praised former drug addicts who have turned their lives around and are now helping others with substance misuse problems.
Shaun Wright attended the Sheffield drug and alcohol coordination team’s ambassador scheme graduation ceremony, to present new ambassadors with their certificates.
Mr Wright said: “The team has my full support in what they are trying to do.”
Ambassadors are all ex-service users, who have overcome their own addictions and completed a 24-week training programme.
Ambassadors must live in Sheffield and have used one of the substance misuse services in the city. They must all have completed their treatment programmes, be drug free and not involved in the supply of illicit substances.
Ambassadors must also not drink excessively.
It is hoped through their experiences they can help others with similar issues to kick their habits.
Mr Wright said: “The dedication of the people I met on the night and on previous occasions is outstanding.
“These people have combated their own demons and then participated in the scheme, while still coming to terms with their own issues.”
