THE M1 motorway was closed for hours yesterday after a multi-vehicle pile-up.
Vehicles including a lorry were involved in a smash on the southbound stretch between junctions 30 and 31 - Clowne and Aston - at around 5am yesterday.
The crash closed all the southbound lanes initially while emergency workers raced to the scene expecting casualties.
But South Yorkshire Police said nobody involved was seriously hurt, and one lane was re-opened to try to reduce the huge tailbacks which developed.
The lorry involved in the collision had a side curtain ripped open, causing it to shed its contents all over the road. Some landed on the road underneath the M1.
The HGV ended up with its front end spinning off the road and balancing at the top of an embankment with its rear wheels in the air.
Firefighters were called out to the crash scene as a precaution to make the vehicles involved safe.
An investigation is underway.
