A bid to make attacks on armed forces an aggravated offence has been rejected.

Barnsley MP Dan Jarvis’ amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill would have affected physical or verbal assaults where the motive was related to the victim’s service.

But it was turned down by 277 to 195 votes.

Mr Jarvis said: “It’s hugely disappointing that the Conservative-led coalition don’t see fit to protect our armed forces.”
