The South Yorkshire man fighting for his life had been involved in an altercation shortly before being hit by a car, police have revealed.
It was first reported that a 37-year-old man was involved in a collision with a car in the Elsecar area of Barnsley just before 7pm yesterday.
However, police have now revealed that the man had been involved in an altercation on Welland Crescent shortly before.
The car, believed to be a Suzuki Swift, is reported to have failed to stop at the scene.
The man suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital where he remains in critical condition.
His family have been informed and are receiving support from family liaison officers.
A Suzuki Swift matching the description given has been recovered by police in the Shaftesbury Drive area.
Enquiries are ongoing and a number of roads were closed in the local area. They have all now been reopened.
No arrests have been made and police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision last night, or witnessed any suspicious activity in the area where the Suzuki was recovered.
