A ROTHERHAM councillor has been backed as a Labour candidate for South Yorkshire’s new Police and Crime Commissioner role.

Coun Shaun Wright, who represents Rawmarsh, has been backed by local MPs John Healey and Denis MacShane.

The election to choose South Yorkshire’s first commissioner, who would have control over police priorities and budgets, is in November.

The MPs said they would be giving Coun Wright, vice-chairman of South Yorkshire Police Authority, their full support in the Labour selection contest.
