A SHEEP breeder has signed up a champion recruit to boost his South Yorkshire flock.
Michael Wynne, of Barnside Farm, Midhopestones, won an auction for the prize winner at one of the large ram sales in the north of England, where 109 went under the hammer at Skipton Auction Mart.
Mr Wynne paid 650 guineas to Bill Cowperthwaite, of North Yorkshire, for the Swaledale ram.
It had just scooped first prize in the shearling ram category at the sale.
A spokesman said: “The sale takes place every 12 months and is part of a really busy sheep sale season.
“The price paid by Mr Wynne is in ‘old money’ and converts to £682.50.
“The top price sale during the event was £2,200.”
Mr Wynne said: “I did not go with the intention of buying a champion but it was a good sheep at a decent price.”
The ram will be used for breeding.
