South Yorkshire blinded military hero makes second attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest

Rotherham road surface specialist SteelPhalt is sponsoring South Yorkshire military hero Leslie Binns as he makes a second attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

The former soldier who was blinded in one eye in an explosion in Afghanistan and subsequently suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, intended to reach the top of the world’s highest peak in 2016.

But the courageous mountaineer abandoned his charity climb just 500 metres from the summit to save the life of another mountaineer.

Now the Rotherham veteran is planning to make is second attempt at conquering Everest - and this time he’ll be taking a SteelPhalt banner with him.

“When we heard that Leslie had not given up his dream we knew we had to do all we could to help make it a reality,” said SteelPhalt Senior Operations Manager Carl Brown.

“Leslie was in the army for 13 years, he served in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan and was blown up four times and awarded two medals, including the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery.

“That’s the sort of man any company would want to support and we are delighted that our £5,000 backing from all four SteelPhalt and Harsco Metals sites in South Yorkshire will help in a very real way.”

Leslie is returning to Everest in a bid to raise money for ABF, the soldiers’ charity that supported him and helped him to retrain after he left the arm and returned to civilian life in South Yorkshire.
