I read with interest Don Alexander’s letter suggesting that the Sheffield Pipe Band should play at Bramall Lane to inspire the six Scots in the United side (Letters and Opinion Feb 17).
I was under the impression that I was the only Sassenach who actually liked bagpipes: I’m bound to say that the sound of pipe and drum makes me come out in goose-pimples.
For the record, as a Barnsley fan, I was surprised to see a lone piper outside Oakwell recently, collecting for a Scottish regiment.
There is not much money around the once-vibrant mining town these days so I was touched to find that he was doing very well; fans were putting their hands in their pockets for him. He didn’t inspire the team much but the experience made me proud to be a Red.
