A TEENAGER is running in her grandma’s footsteps in the Sheffield half marathon.
Sheffield University student Sophie McGowan, aged 19, will raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of her inspirational grandmother Gertie Hill, a former mayoress of Dewsbury who was a stalwart of the charity.
Gertie spent 50 years collecting vital funds for Macmillan in Batley and Dewsbury.
She was diagnosed with stomach cancer in June 2011 and died the next month.
Sophie, of Broomhill, Sheffield, is now determined to continue her legacy.
She said: “I feel having lost such a wonderful lady that it was my time to give something back.
“Macmillan was a charity very close to her heart, and now is to mine.
“I want to make a real difference.”
