Snow chaos but rain on the way

HEAVY snowfall across South Yorkshire last night caused chaos on the roads during the evening rush hour - but there is only rain forecast for today.

The snow started to fall at around 4pm - just as some workers were beginning to make their way home.

It fell solidly for around three hours, covering the roads in a thick blanket of snow as commuters tried to make their way home.

Although the main roads in Sheffield had been gritted on Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the forecasted snow, the gritters themselves got stuck on gridlocked roads and were unable to reach the rest of the network.

Bus and tram commuters also faced misery again last night as snow fell on the city.

First and Stagecoach buses were disrupted in Sheffield along with the Supertram because of the wintry conditions.

Services affected included First's number 30, which stopped serving Tithe Barn Lane in Woodhouse and the 41 which stopped travelling to the centre of Halfway.

The number 52 service to Crookes was also affected, terminating at Brook Hill roundabout, and the 57/58 only reached the lower road in Oughtibridge and Stocksbridge.

First's 81 and 82 services were unable to negotiate Greystones Road, and the 94 and 95 also terminated at Brook Hill.

Sandtoft Road in Hatfield Woodhouse, Doncaster, was closed after a crash last night during the snow.

Police issued a warning urging motorists to avoid the road because of the conditions.

Police also closed Woodhead Road, Wortley, Sheffield, because of the amount of snow which fell and after a collision on Little Common Lane, Whiston, Rotherham, police also declared that stretch impassable.

Councillor Ian Auckland, Sheffield Council's Cabinet Member for Transport and Streetscene, said: "I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to people trying to make their way home after work on Wednesday evening.

"Our gritting teams had treated the main roads on Tuesday night and again before the snow fell on Wednesday afternoon, but the heaviest snowfall coincided with the main rush hour traffic and our gritters were also unable to move through the heavy traffic."

Weather forecasters were this morning predicting rain for today and tomorrow.
