ANIMAL lover Alan Grimmer had a real surprise when he popped to his hen house to pick up a little something for his breakfast.
For the something he picked up wasn’t just little - it was tiny.
Underneath one of his roosting hens Alan discovered what he believes must be the smallest chicken egg ever - measuring about one inch long.
Retired miner Alan, aged 73, of Whinmoor Road, High Green keeps his hens on his Hillsborough allotment.
He said: “There were 13 eggs in the nesting box plus one I almost missed.
“I’ve been keeping chickens all my life and I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Alan’s son Chris said he cracked up when he saw the egg.
Chris, 35, an unemployed ground worker, said: “I couldn’t stop laughing.“It’s around about an inch long, We reckon it might be a world record.
Guinness World Records lists the smallest recorded chicken egg as 2.7cm long - that’s two millimetres longer than Alan’s egg.
Chris said: “The chickens lay stacks of eggs all around the allotment but all the rest are normal-sized.”
