The spirit of the Oscars was there for all to see as three writers learned they are loved by Doncaster schoolchildren.

Two of the three winners announced in front of a crowd of 350 pupils provided a Hollywood-style filmed message of thanks at the grand final of the Doncaster Book Awards at Cusworth Hall.

The awards this year had three categories, with all the winners voted for from a shortlist, which was in turn based on how many times books were borrowed from the children’s library last year.

Secondary school category winner Kathy Cassidy, pictured above with Don Valley School pupils, was there in person to collect her award, and thanked the children for their support for her book, Summer’s Dream.

Primary school category winner Liz Pichon, a winner for Everything’s Amazing (Sort Of), and classic read winner John Boyne, for The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, provided video messages.
