A NEW funeral home is up and running in Sheffield - after first being blessed by neighbourhood clergymen at a head-turning opening ceremony.

A traditional horse-drawn hearse was the main attraction at an open day held by the new Handsworth and District Funeral Directors on Handsworth Road.

A service of dedication was conducted by Father Murphy from St Mary’s Church, joined by Father Goonan from St Oswald’s, Father Loxley from St Catherine’s and retired minister Richard Miller.

Funeral manager Lynne Grieveson said: “The horse-drawn cart certainly provided a talking point.

“Several people came to take photographs of the horses and some even fed them carrots and mints.”

The ministers were thanked by Pat Leeds, area manager for Dignity, which owns the home.

Ms Leeds said: “We are very pleased to be opening this new funeral home and becoming part of the community.”
