Skip hire trader hits out at ‘vendetta’ injunction

A SKIP hire trader made the subject of an injunction for allegedly running a scrap business from a house on a Sheffield estate claims the police, council and residents are pursuing a vendetta against him and he is being unfairly treated.

Lee Mayfield and his sons Daniel and Francis were given the order at Sheffield County Court in a case brought by Sanctuary Housing, supported by Sheffield Council.

Around 20 residents gave evidence at the hearing, supported by police.

Susan Biggs, who owns the house at the centre of the allegations, on Woolley Wood Road, Shiregreen, is not named on the injunction.

The order prohibits the family from using their home as a base for business operations, restricts them from parking large or extra vehicles outside their property, and bans them from harassing residents.

Sheffield Council has been pursuing Mr Mayfield for three years accusing him of operating a scrap metal business from the house, where one of his sons lives, without planning permission.

Mr Mayfield said today: “The real story is the authorities want me away from the estate.

“They can’t understand why I own a £1million house in Rotherham and think I’m a drug dealer.

“I’m not a criminal – the only convictions I have are for motoring 30 years ago.

“I was also sentenced to a month in prison two years ago for a dangerous dogs offence.

“My sons don’t have criminal records. Nobody has been intimidated or assaulted by our family - it’s all lies.”

Mr Mayfield said the vehicles parked on Woolley Wood Road were vans belonging to his family – and his business was based in Grimesthorpe.

“Plenty of other people park their work vehicles outside their homes around the area, including vans and trucks,” he said.

Mrs Biggs added: “There’s no injunction against me. Most of the people complaining are from the same family.”

But Coun Sioned Mair-Richards, Labour councillor for Shiregreen and Brightside, said: “Residents who gave evidence included a pensioner in her eighties who was in the Women’s Land Army in World War II.

“This injunction is a success and wouldn’t have happened without their bravery in coming to court.”
