Silver screen returning to Abbeydale Picture House after 33 years
THE glamour of the silver screen is returning to one of Sheffield's much-loved old picture houses on Saturday after an absence of more than 33 years.
Abbeydale Picture House on Abbeydale Road will return to its heyday by showing Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic South Pacific, with an afternoon family show of Hoodwinked. Tickets are limited to just 300 per show.
The landmark building was once the heartbeat of a neighbourhood with a cinema, dance hall, caf and bar, but fell on hard times and closed its doors in 1975.
Now thanks to the voluntary efforts of local thespians, the Grade II listed building is once more up and running on a shoestring budget staging youth theatre productions and live music – and is now reintroducing cinema.
An ambitious 12 million Heritage Lottery Fund bid is in the pipeline to transform the old cinema, built in 1920, into a modern arts space.
But the roof must be replaced at a cost of 300,000 to make the building watertight – and the cash has to be raised by the picture house.
South Pacific will be screened at 7.30pm with tickets costing 5.
Hoodwinked will be shown at 4.30pm with family tickets for two adults and two children costing 20 and all other tickets 5.
The box office hotline is on 07775 966106.
