A SHEFFIELD MP is urging residents to sign up to a new service which sends them free messages reminding them to test their smoke alarms.
Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith said smoke alarms were life saving inventions, but only if the batteries were working.
South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said it has attended more than 100 house fires in the last three years in which the smoke alarm battery was either flat or missing.
The MP said: “It’s obvious smoke alarms only save lives if the batteries are working, so I’d urge as many people as possible to sign up.
The campaign is backed by The Star.
More than 90 people die in house fires each year in the UK because their smoke alarms fail.
