A cat was left with injuries so horrific it had to be put to sleep - after being thrown on to a bonfire by callous thugs in South Yorkshire.
RPSCA Inspector Lynsey Harris said today the burns the cat suffered were among the worst examples of cruelty she had ever seen.
The pet - who a vet believes had recently given birth to kittens - was so severely burned her eyes had melted together and her nose had burned off.
The still-alive cat could open her mouth slightly, but most of her face had suffered significant burns.
The female tortoiseshell cat - found by a dog walker in woodland off Lamb Lane, Barnsley, on Tuesday afternoon - also had severe burns to her front legs and burns to her back legs and tail.
Despite the injuries the cat was found alive, stumbling and meowing in pain.
Insp Harris said: “This was one of the worst things I have ever seen.
“This poor cat could have been wandering around in this pain for up to two days – and it is clear from her injuries that it looks like she had been thrown on to a fire.
“We took her straight to a vet, and she was immediately put to sleep to end her suffering.”
She added: “I was in tears and my colleague was in tears - we just couldn’t comprehend how someone could cause an animal such suffering.”
Insp Harris said the vet who examined the cat believed she may have had kittens recently.
