Show the will and mend ways

IT'S a disgrace that an elderly lady has to suffer the constant torment she endures from gangs of youths who gather close to her home, a flat in Pitsmoor.

Sadly we believe that Jean Gausden is not alone, particularly if experiences shared with us through our post bag are anything to go by.

It all adds up to a break down in respect towards older people, many of them living by themselves and therefore vulnerable to such outrageous incidents as Ms Gausden witnessed.

The intermittent nature of the offences makes it difficult to pinpoint culprits. But that may be, at least in part, because the offences are not considered to be criminal but have been down-graded to anti-social behaviour.

This sends out a message to perpetrators that all they may expect is a telling off. That is not enough for frail pensioners intimidated in their own homes.

Where the is a will there is a way to mend the behaviour of these young bullies. What we need, therefore, is a show of will and determination from the authorities concerned.

Now work towards easing congestion

AT last we hear some uncompromising criticism of Sheffield council's highways department who have overseen a steady deterioration in the ability of ordinary motorists to go about their daily business in the city.

Best, but far from only, example of this is in Woodseats which is a no-go area for thousands of commuters who avoid the district like the plague.

Some may believe they have achieved something from the 4 million of obstacles, hindrances and utterly baffling changes to the road layout.

But all that has happened is the problem has been moved elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the flow of traffic through Woodseats has not improved in the least. By any measure this is a complete flop and a total waste of hard earned councillors' money.

Nobody believes road management and design is an easy job. But those responsible for this duty should heed warnings that the highways department may be dismantled for failing to take into consideration the ordinary men and women of Sheffield who simply will not abide by an out-dated and un-enforcable tactic to drive everyone out of their private cars. They should be working towards easing the congestion which haunts the city, not causing it.

Say it with flowers

IF you should be lucky enough to attend the 2012 Olympics, look out for a blooming wonderful splash of Sheffield colour. For University experts have designed a string of meadows filled with glorious wild flowers to enhance the games venues. Just what you would expect from the country's greenest city!
