WITH the very dry March and April we have had, the water authorities are rightly getting concerned about stocks at the reservoirs.
I clearly recall that in the long hot summer of 1976, many people still reacted in an uncaring and irresponsible way to the water shortage, such as constantly leaving taps dripping or even running into empty sinks.
They’d be the first to moan if water was rationed.
If my memory serves me correctly, we also had a dry spring and summer in 1995 and water tankers were called in to bring thousands of gallons of water to the Yorkshire area.
Gardeners would do well to have water butts - if they can afford them - as a lot of water can be conserved in this way. It is up to everyone to show care and prudence with this vital commodity, which so many just take for granted.
