DIY shops have joined forces with Doncaster Council to tackle rogue waste carriers.

Householders getting rid of bulky rubbish are being warned to ensure it is done legally by checking that contractors removing waste from their property are properly registered. If waste is fly-tipped, they could face a fine of £5,000.

Flyers highlighting the message are being placed on tills at DIY stores across the borough including B&Q, Homebase and Tile Depot.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Unscrupulous contractors charge to dispose of your rubbish at a registered site, when they are really dumping it over the nearest hedge or side street.

“These contractors are quite happy to take your money and then leave you picking up the clean-up bill and, possibly, facing a criminal conviction and a fine.”

To check a firm is legal call the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506 for an instant Waste Carrier Validation.
