HUNDREDS of pounds was raised for armed forces personnel and their families after a collection took place in Sheffield city centre.

The annual Flag Day collection event was organised by charity SSAFA - Forces Help, which assists soldiers, sailors, airmen and their families, and supported by Mayor Coun Alan Law.

Supporters of the charity, plus Private John Bush of the Territorial Army’s Fourth Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, based at Endcliffe Hall, went out with collection buckets.

Col Richard Elliott, divisional secretary of SSAFA - Forces Help, said: “We collected outside the Town Hall, Barker’s Pool and Orchard Square. Pte Bush, who is going to Afghanistan next year, was a wonderful ambassador - he couldn’t have taken another penny into his collection box and did us proud.”

Col Elliott also thanked outgoing Mayor Coun Law for his support.

He said: “Coun Law has been a terrific supporter - and we’ve been nominated as one of the chosen charities for his fund, which is gratefully appreciated.”
