Shop thugs by text fans urged

SHEFFIELD Wednesday are appealing to fans to finger the football thugs by using their thumbs.

Security staff at the club are to introduce a ground-breaking scheme where fans shop hooligans by text.

The scheme will be launched during Saturday's Division Two derby clash with Chesterfield.

Hillsborough Operations manager Alan Roberts says the unique way of informing on troublemakers is one of a number of new initiatives at the club to clamp down on a "minority" of unruly fans.

He said: "Our aim is to eradicate anti-social behaviour which can spoil the match for other supporters.

"Fans are continually asked to report instances of bad behaviour to stewards but we do realise this can be an intimidating experience, especially when reporting someone who may be sitting next to you.

"Texting us information such as where the troublemakers are sitting will enable us to direct cctv cameras and place undercover security staff in the area to monitor the situation."

Mr Roberts and his staff will monitor the number – 07963 138580 – from 9am Saturday morning until 6pm on Saturday.

The line will also be checked during the week.

Mr Roberts said: "The idea is to use the system primarily on match days but it can also be used Monday to Friday.

"We hope it works by offering fans the opportunity to report trouble without the fear of intimidation.

"But as it's brand new it is very much a suck-it-and-see situation."
