Shock toll of car thefts in Sheffield

SHEFFIELD and Doncaster have been ranked among the top 10 worst places in the country for vehicle thefts, according to new figures.

Doncaster has been ranked as the fifth worst place for thefts and Sheffield the eighth by insurance firm Endsleigh.

The table is based on claims the insurance firm has received for stolen cars and possessions left in them over the last three years.

Hull is ranked as the worst place for thefts and Swindon as the safest.

Endsleigh spokesman Stuart Wartalski said: "Despite the encouraging national Government statistics that show a decline in car crime, some cities are still at higher risk than others and our figures will of course be a concern to residents. However, South Yorkshire Police have recently introduced a crime prevention initiative, in conjunction with students from Sheffield's Spring Academy including an awareness raising DVD featuring two former Sheffield United football players, highlighting the effects and consequences of criminal damage, which has had a significant impact on safety.

"It is important for drivers to remember to avoid any unnecessary risk."
