A WOMAN was taken to hospital after a bus crashed into the stop where she was queuing.

The number 87 Stagecoach bus collided with the bus shelter in the Waingate area of Sheffield city centre, just outside the Castle Market, just before 1pm yesterday.

Emergency crews were called to the scene as shards of glass from the bus stop were left scattered across the pavement and road.

A woman was treated by paramedics at the scene and was later taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital for further examination.

Police monitored the area to ensure no other members of the public were harmed by the debris.

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach South Yorkshire said: “We can confirm that a number 87 bus was involved in a collision with a bus shelter in Sheffield city centre.

“A female waiting at the shelter was taken to hospital as a precaution with minor cuts.

“The incident is being investigated by South Yorkshire Police and we are conducting our own investigation.

“As such, we are unable to comment further at this time.”

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: “We were called out to reports of a lady who was injured due to the collapse of a bus shelter and we took her to the Northern General Hospital.”
