Sheffield under attack from guerrilla knitters
NOW the Diary would not have believed this yarn until it saw the pictures. Sheffield is under attack from guerrilla knitters!
As these photos show, nowhere is safe.
It's knit one, pearl one, slip one and suddenly there's another lamp post decorated with knittng.
Nor are traffic lights or railing immune from getting a quick cuddle from a hank of yarn.
The Star received these photographs on an e-mail from someone who describes herself as Guerrilla Knitta and there are links to websites and a MySpace address.
They say: "Legend has it that the group known as Knitta began in August 2005, when the soon-to-be-Knittas were discussing their frustration over unfinished knitting projects: half-knitted sweaters and yarn balls gathering dust.
"Then it dawned on them… a tag crew of knitters, bombing inner cities with vibrant, stitched works of art, wrapped around everything from beer bottles to public monuments and utility poles on more ambitious outings."
According to the www.knittaplease.com website the members include PolyCotN, GrannySQ and, a man, MascuKnitty, although the Diary rather suspects these are noms-de-knit.
The sites are full of pictures of objects in cities around the world decorated with knitting.
When the Diary e-mailed to find out more, back came this message.
"I thought you might be knit picky about finding out my identity. My name is Pearl Wan, you may find me under that name or I may just be telling you a good yarn.
"More clues as to my identity will be appearing decorating the beautiful concrete of Sheff-ield over the coming months.
"Knitting rocks!"
Which is a bit of a woolly reply.
The Diary wonders whether readers see any pattern in the knitting that reveals her identity.
Over to you folks.
