Sheffield eateries snap up awards

HEALTHY food was on the menu at an awards ceremony celebrating Sheffield eateries which provide fresh and wholesome dishes.

The Healthy Choices initiative gave out awards in a host of different categories including Best Healthy Food establishment - which went to Homemade caf in Nether Edge.

The Sourcing Food Locally award was picked up by Silversmiths, city centre, which orders 70 per cent of its ingredients from Sheffield.

The Most Breastfeeding Friendly establishment went to Nonnas in Ecclesall Road for its welcoming environment, and the Fairtrade award went to SMaRT Venue in Sharrow.

The Burton Street Foundation in Hillsborough, a project for youngsters with learning disabilities which also runs a caf, scooped the Community Champion Award, while Nonnas also picked up the Most Inspiring award in recognition of all-round performance.

The ceremony was funded by Sheffield's Let's Change 4Life Programme - a national initiative encouraging people to exercise more and eat better - and was run in conjunction with Sheffield Wildlife Trust's Healthy Choices programme.

Carol Weir, NHS Sheffield's programme director of the scheme in Sheffield, said: "All the winners and shortlisted entries are already achieving so much by contributing towards offering healthier alternatives to the people of Sheffield."

Siobhan Horsley, food programme manager at Sheffield Wildlife Trust, added: "We've had nothing but positive feedback from all the participating establishments and I'm sure that the award ceremony will go from strength to strength as more caterers become Healthy Choice Award accredited."
