Theatrical youngsters wore elaborate costumes to stage an end-of-year school show with a cultural twist.

Year 6 pupils at St Thomas More Primary in Grenoside performed The Mikado, a comic opera which dates back to 1885 and is set in Japan.

A packed audience of parents watched the show - complete with colourful Japanese fans and props.

Natalie Clarke, deputy headteacher at the school on Creswick Lane, said: “It really was a fantastic show, the children loved every minute, and the audience were amazed by the quality of the performance, saying they had never seen anything like it in a primary school.”

Students rehearsed after school for weeks to perfect their performances.

One parent, Helen McCall, got in touch with school leaders afterwards to praise teaching assistant Pauline Hepkin for planning and producing the show ‘fantastically’.
