Sheffield Wednesday's tribute to soldier killed in Afghanistan - PICTURES
THOUSANDS of football fans paid an emotional tribute last night to a Sheffield soldier who lost his life on the battlefields of Afghanistan.
Fallen soldier Corporal Liam Riley, who was described by Prince Harry as "a legend", fell in the field while trying to save Army pal Lance Corporal Graham Shaw in Helmand Province.
Both soldiers - Cpl Riley a life-long Wednesdayite from Killamarsh and LCpl Shaw from Huddersfield - were serving in the war-torn country with the 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Flags at Hillsborough football ground flew at half mast last night and Owls players wore black arm bands for the game with Blackpool - which Wednesday won 2-0.
Michael Gray paid his own personal tribute to Cpl Riley by wearing a T-shirt declaring "Liam Riley Legend" during the warm up.
Just before kick off the crowd, including Cpl Riley's dad Mick, in his usual seat on the Kop, brother Jonjo and many of his mates, competed a minute's applause in his honour.
The minute ended with a roar of approval which rose from both the Wednesday and Blackpool ends as fans of both clubs remembered the brave soldier.
