A sea of blue and white flags and shirts waited outside Sheffield town hall for Owls stars to come out on the balcony.
Supporters sang, bounced, chanted ‘the city is ours’ and danced in jubilation at getting in to the championship at the civic reception.
And rapturous cheers went up as the trophy was handed over.
Lauren Saywell, 18, of Hillsborough, said: “I was brought up with Sheffield Wednesday. The atmosphere at the match was amazing and it’s been the same again here. The rain doesn’t matter.”
Wednesday leaders and players said the club’s success was down to the supporters.
Speaking from the town hall balcony, chairman Milan Mandaric said: “On behalf of all of us at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, directors, managers, employees and players, we would like to say from the bottom of our hearts - thank you.”
