CIVIC celebrations will take place to mark Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion from League One to the Championship.

Huge crowds are expected for the city centre event, when players have been invited to make a public appearance to fans from the Town Hall balcony before having a reception with the Lord Mayor.

The celebration is to be held from 6pm on Wednesday.

Sheffield Council leader and Wednesday fan, Coun Julie Dore, said: “It’s great news for Sheffield that Wednesday are back in the Championship and we hope that United will join them after the play-offs.

“Sheffield’s football fans deserve teams playing in the top divisions and we hope that this success will lead the clubs back towards the Premiership in the near future.”

Wednesday have secured promotion after finishing second in League One following a 2-0 victory at home to Wycombe Wanderers.
