Committed members of the Stannington and District Library Group have received a Good Neighbours Group Award from Bradfield Parish Council.
The award was presented by Sheffield Lord Mayor Coun Vickie Priestley and Bradfield parish council chairman Stuart Cole during the parish council’s annual meeting.
STAND was formed late last year to take over the management of Stannington Library in response to Sheffield Council’s announcement of proposed library closures.
The group of volunteers were deemed worthy recipients of the award for the work they have done so far in preparing to take over the library when the council stands back later this year.
Their efforts have included having the first stage of a library management business plan approved.
The chair of STAND, Jenny van Tinteren, said: “Winning the Good Neighbours Group Award from Bradfield Parish Council is a significant milestone for us.
“It shows people are taking note of what we are doing, and that they appreciate its value, not just for Stannington alone but for the whole of the Bradfield parish.
“It also shows that they believe we will be keeping the library open.”
As well as a plaque commemorating the award, STAND received a cheque from the parish council for £150. The group said the money will go into their coffers, and that fundraising will continue to be a priority, as will attracting further volunteers as STAND moves closer to taking up its responsibilities.
Its final business plan will be handed to the council on June 30.
