TWO Sheffield United fans enjoyed a perfect match when they were engaged as their team sealed a place in the League One play-off final.

Ricky Bradbury, aged 20, got down on one knee to ask for girlfriend Paige Greasby’s hand in marriage during half-time at Bramall Lane on Monday night.

He arranged for the proposal to appear on-screen when he went to purchase the couple’s tickets for the clash against Stevenage - leaving 18-year-old lifelong Blades fan Paige stunned.

Ricky, who works for Global Windows and Doors in Barnsley, said: “I decided to propose when I was picking up the tickets, as Paige is a massive United supporter.”

With neither team managing to score in the first 45 minutes, tensions were running high, but Ricky was determined to pop the question to his girlfriend of 13 months in front of the 21,000-plus crowd who had turned out for the big occasion.

Unlike his football team, Ricky’s bride-to-be did not leave him hanging in suspense. Paige accepted the proposal straight away, to loud cheers from fellow Blades fans in the stands.

The icing on the cake came when the pair, from Barnsley, watched their team emerge victorious, allowing them to compete for a place in the Championship against Huddersfield Town at Wembley next Saturday.

However, with the countdown to United’s big day on, it is still touch and go whether newly-engaged Ricky will be able to make it to the match.

Ricky said: “I am still waiting to hear whether I can have the day off work to go down to Wembley, I am hoping everything should be okay and they’ll let me though.

“I was nervous because it was still 0-0 at half-time when I proposed, we both were, but I just wanted to do it there.

“The goal came near the end of the game and the win just topped it off for us both. If I can get the day off work we’ll definitely be going to Wembley together.

“Paige is a bigger Blades fan than I am.”
