SHEFFIELD United star Ched Evans has been charged with rape after an alleged incident at a Premier Inn in Rhuddlan, North Wales.
But the shocked striker says he will strenuously deny the allegations and fight to clear his name.
The incident, on May 30, is alleged to have involved a woman who claims her drinks were spiked in a club in Rhyl.
Evans’s solicitor and agent Matthew Bennett, said: “We wish to confirm that Ched Evans has this week been charged with an offence of rape by the North Wales Police.
“Ched wishes to place on record that he strenuously denies the charge and will defend it vigorously in order to clear his name.”
A club statement said: “Sheffield United Football Club has been made aware of legal proceedings involving one of its employees.”
