A BLADES fan has been ordered to pay compensation to two couples offended by his insults about Muslims on a train journey.
Boozy Mark Challoner was on his way home from London after watching Sheffield United play at Millwall when he began making racially abusive comments as the train pulled out of St Pancras.
“He said; ‘If there are any Muslims on this train I’m going to rip their throats out and burn the Koran’,” prosecutor Helen Griffiths told Chesterfield magistrates.
Challoner, aged 43, from Pembroke Crescent, High Green, Sheffield, repeated the comment despite friends telling him to be quiet.
Challoner denied religiously aggravated harassment but was convicted by magistrates after a trial.
He was ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work and must pay £100 compensation to the two couples plus £300 costs.
Geoffrey Flemming, defending, said: “He got on a rowdy football train with a few pints inside him and said things which would perhaps have been better left unsaid. It was an unfortunate episode.”
