Sheffield United and Wednesday football brains to face quiz

AN ALL-star panel of top football brains will discuss the links between soccer and society at an event organised by Sheffield University and Sheffield United.

Big names at the event this Friday include ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager Howard Wilkinson and the chairmen of the Blades and the Owls, Kevin McCabe and Lee Strafford.

Chaired by BBC Radio Sheffield's Rob Staton, the discussions will also feature former Minister for Sport Richard Caborn, Dr Rogan Taylor, co-founder of the Football Supporters' Association and James Hope-Gill, chief executive of Sheffield and Hallamshire FA.

'The Good of the Game: Football, Society and Globalisation' will be a Question Time style event held in front of an audience at the university.

The panel will discuss many pressing issues including whether football is losing its community links due to commercial globalisation, what role football plays in society, and whether sporting events reinforce social identity among communities.
