Sheffield Ukip councillors who had leaflets dropped on their heads at a council meeting took an unusual step to protect themselves - by donning hard hats.

The three councillors were called ‘racists’ and ‘xenophobes’ by people in the public gallery, who also dropped the leaflets, at full council in September.

The leaflets were urging people to demonstrate against the party’s conference held in Doncaster.

This week the city’s three Ukip councillors put on their hard hats after the Lord Mayor had opened the full meeting and there had been a minute’s silence.

Jack Clarkson, the leader of Sheffield’s Ukip group, said that although no injuries were caused it was of ‘great concern as anything could have been thrown’ from the balcony by the protesters.

He added: “Although wearing the hats was a light -hearted affair, we want The Lord Mayor of Sheffield to act should any person throw missiles at any councillor.

“Bob The Builder would have been proud of us.”

Sheffield Ukip Couns Clarkson, John Booker and Pauline Andrews were elected in May.
