WEST Street in Sheffield city centre was closed to traffic early this evening after a woman was knocked down by a bus.

The Supertram system was suspended in the city centre with services heading east and south from the Cathedral and north-west from Shalesmoor.

A limited single line working from Shalesmoor to University of Sheffield tram stop was in operation.

Westbound buses were being diverted down Trippet Lane and Broad Lane.

West Street was cordoned off between the junctions of Eldon Street and Carver Street and 19 buses and two trams are trapped in the gridlock.

The injured woman was been taken to Sheffield Northern General Hospital. The extent of her injuries were not known.
