A sports centre will be temporarily run by Sheffield Council as a school trust did not take it on.
Wisewood Sports Centre has been run by Forge Valley School since 2011, but the school is now set to become part of the Tapton Academy Trust.
The council has agreed to step in until a long term solution is found so the centre does not close.
Coun Jackie Drayton, cabinet member for families, said it was ‘frustrating for the community’ that the centre’s future had been put ‘in jeopardy’.
But David Bowes, trust chief executive, said the trust had been ‘adamant’ that it would not go forward with the conversion to academy status until the issue was resolved to the satisfaction of all.Staff had been long involved in talks with the council and a number of parties were interested in the site.
He added: “We were told that us taking on the lease would not happen and the Department of Education was very clear that our academy conversion could not go ahead until that was resolved.”
