Sheffield Wednesday stars will need a new place to buy their electronics - as a popular shop closes today after almost 50 years.

Hewitts on Ecclesall Road opened in 1965, and current co-owner Phil Robinson has been in place for 40 years.

He said the decision to close was a ‘sign of the times’, and that Ecclesall Road had changed vastly over the years.

Many celebrity clients have called in at the store for their televisions and radios.

Owls fan Phil, who ran the store with business partner Chris Hemmings, added: “It is sad in some respects, after 40 years of hard graft.

“Danny Wilson, Carlton Palmer, David Hirst - they’ve all been in. Howard Webb came in for a TV just the other day.

“We’ve done an awful lot of business with footballers over the years, we’re very proud.”

A new retail unit will now be created downstairs at the shop with flats on the upper floors.
