A former school security guard who looked at child porn during shifts has been jailed - after staff at an electrical store discovered more than 3,000 illegal images on his computer.

Michael Shaw, aged 53, of Hazlebarrow Crescent, Jordanthorpe, admitted downloading the pictures of children between June and December 2012.

Sheffield Crown Court heard Shaw was a former security guard at Handsworth Grange Community Sports College and accessed the images while at work.

The pictures were found after Shaw took his laptop into a Curry’s store in Sheffield to have some files transferred.

When staff started the job, they discovered 885 images on his laptop and 2,266 on his external hard drive of children aged between five and 15.

The pictures were category C images, which the judge, Peter Kelson QC, defined as ‘nudity with erotic posing and no sexual acts.’

Defending, Robert Aspinall said: “This is a man that realises the difficulties he has got and wants to change.”

The court heard that Shaw worked night shifts at Handsworth Grange and ‘never came into contact’ with students. He also resigned from his job and told the school about his arrest.

Jailing Shaw for 10 weeks, Judge Kelson said: “These children were being exploited and you downloaded them and visited them at your place of work which was a school.”

Shaw was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and is now barred from working with children.
