Sheffield school friends reunited - VIDEO

IT'S now a trendy city centre nightspot filled with bars, restaurants, and a boutique hotel.

But the years rolled away at Leopold Square in Sheffield city centre when five former pupils of its former City Grammar School met up for an informal class reunion.

Ex City Grammar School boy Frank Thorpe, aged 72, organised the get-together when he heard Beryl Hearnshaw, nee Smith, would be in Sheffield for a few days before returning to her home in the USA.

"She doesn't come to England very often, so we thought we'd get a few of the old pupils together," he said.

The former classmates met up in The Leopold hotel across the square from the place their classrooms stood - and for Beryl, also 72, it was like she'd never been away.

"It's unbelievable that I'd not seen them for so many years, and then when we meet we're all buddy-buddy," she said. "The fact I'm meeting somebody I've not seen for 40 years seems like yesterday for me."

She finished school in 1953, when she was 16 years old, and City Grammar School moved away from Leopold Street in 1964.

The building that housed the school still stands, but is now home to restaurants, and the former schoolyard now has trees, benches and a fountain.

Frank said: "I'm very impressed with the way they've maintained the faade of all the buildings here. It's turned out to be quite a superb place. They've cleaned the brickwork up - I think it was all black when we were here!"
