POTENTIAL Olympic heroes of tomorrow have been honoured with special scholarships through a pioneering Sheffield University programme.
A group of 24 rising stars were welcomed to the Elite Sports Performance Scheme at a ceremony in the Students’ Union.
Two Sheffield graduates who were key members of Team GB this year – Paralympic table tennis champion Dave Wetherill, aged 22, and 24-year-old volleyball player Kieran O’Malley – presented the awards.
The scheme was launched in 2010 to provide financial and non-financial support to talented student athletes at the university.
Athletes receive support such as free gym access and physiotherapy. Others get a £1,000 grant.
