SHAFFAQ Mohammed has been elected as Paul Scriven’s successor to lead the Liberal Democrat group on Sheffield Council, writes Ben Spencer.

The Broomhill ward councillor, a close ally of former council chief Paul Scriven, was voted in by fellow Lib Dem councillors at their annual general meeting tonight.

Coun Mohammed admitted he had a tough job ahead, after his party was swept out of power by a Labour landslide at the local elections earlier this month.

He said: “I’m delighted to be trusted with the job of leading the group. There is no doubt that the local election results show Liberal Democrats have a tough task ahead.

“However, we can be proud of our local record and the people of Sheffield will remember this if local Labour councillors go back to their bad old ways.

“Despite the fact that Labour took control of the council, more than half of people who voted in the local elections didn’t vote for them. We will ensure that those people have a voice by providing a robust opposition and a real alternative to Labour policies.”
