HE used to fit kitchens – but a former Sheffield schoolboy is now going in at the deep end.

Adam Whittingham, a former pupil at Yewlands School, Parson Cross, was among the Royal Navy recruits on parade at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall to mark the end of basic training, before training to be a diver.

Adam, aged 28, said: “My ambition is to concentrate on being a diver for five years or so and then try the All-Arms-Commando course to work with the Royal Marines.”

Adam will now transfer to HMS Collingwood, in Hampshire, where he will undergo his specialist training to qualify as a diver.

Royal Navy divers can be called upon to perform a variety of tasks from destroying mines to disposing of Second World War weaponry dragged up in a trawler’s net.
