She was taken away from Michael Flint after neighbours saw him abusing the dog and said they had seen him throw her against a wall.

The RSPCA was alerted by a neighbour who noticed Molly limping. An inspector took her to a vet who found she had five separate injuries including a fractured hip.

The pup, now aged one, also had an old fracture in one of her front legs, a lump on the back of her head and injuries to another leg and her pelvis.

RSPCA inspector Leanne Booth said: “The vet found the injuries were from a beating and they would have been sustained over weeks as the injuries were different ages.”

Her hip bone could not be repaired and had to be removed to stop it causing Molly further pain.

Flint, of Alport Place, Frecheville, Sheffield, has been banned from keeping animals for life.

He was given a 16-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, 100 hours of unpaid work and had to pay £500 in court costs.

Insp Booth said: “Molly is a lovely dog and we want to find an owner who is experienced in large breed dogs, who will have time and patience to work with her.”
