A protest took place in Sheffield yesterday over the continuing rise of train fares.

The railway station demo, organised by Sheffield Green party candidates and activists from various campaign groups, was also held to raise awareness of a private members bill calling for public ownership of railways from Green MP Caroline Lucas. Fares rose again on January 1, for the 12th year in a row, by more than two per cent.

The Green candidate for Sheffield Hallam, Peter Garbutt, said: “The constant rising cost of maintaining the dysfunctional rail network is hitting ordinary people, especially rail commuters, who are footing the bill while companies line their pockets. In tough financial times we must make it easier and cheaper for people to travel on our railways.”
