A Sheffield charity worker is urging people in South Yorkshire to follow in her footsteps and Stand Up To Cancer.

Becky Lomax will take a stand against the disease later this month – when she stands upright for 24-hours straight, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

And now Becky is hoping others across the region will join her in the challenge, on Friday, October 18.

Becky, Cancer Research UK’s Yorkshire regional fundraising manager, said: “There are so many ways that people can take part in the Stand Up To Cancer challenge and it can be as easy or challenging as you like.

“You can either go for a 24-hour endurance challenge like me, or try extreme standing, which means choosing a weird and wonderful location, like a bath or baked beans, or the top of Howden Moors.

“Or you could try something different, like swapping your normal office footwear for flippers – whatever you can do to get involved.”

Last year, Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 joined forces to launch ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ for the first time – raising £8 million to help accelerate ground-breaking cancer research.

Becky, aged 38, said: “Most of us know people whose lives have been touched by the disease and this is an opportunity to make a stand and to help more people survive cancer.

“We are calling on everyone in South Yorkshire to unite with people across the UK and Stand Up To Cancer.

“By joining Stand Up To Cancer, supporters in the region will be uniting with doctors, nurses, scientists, and celebrities to generate funds, raise awareness and bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

“Thanks to research, more people are surviving cancer than ever before, but there’s still so much more to do.

“It’s not technology or knowledge holding back our fight against cancer - it’s funding.”

Comedian Alan Carr is among the many celebrities supporting the campaign.

He said: “I know all too well how devastating this disease is for families everywhere and I’m asking everyone to join me and make a stand.
